A non-wine girls first impression of the California Wine Club

I fully admit, I drink them, but I don’t know much about wines. I am the one who stands in front of the wine at the grocery store, looking like a deer in headlights. It’s not pretty.

Lucky for me, I was given the opportunity to experience the California Wine Club’s Premier Club Membership. Their most popular wine club membership features two bottles of award-winning wine from California’s best “mom & pop” wineries. No membership fees, cancel anytime and all wines are 100% guaranteed.

I don’t know what was more exciting, been selected as a recipient of a 3 month Premier Club Membership or having wine delivered right to my door! Two bottles of wine from Perry Creek Winery, both the 2008 ‘Zinman’ Zinfandel and the 2009 El Dorado Chardonnay arrived, carefully packaged in it’s own little shipping box. I even signed for it! This is important as it insures the recipient is over 21, which I am. (No I am not going to tell you how old I am!)

In fact, I was so excited, I opened the shipping box and texted a photo to my husband, Alan, who was at work. See…

In my excitement, I took this lovely photo of the wines we received and texted it to Alan.

Alan and I enjoyed the special treat of having wine delivered to our home. Even nicer was the wine was selected for us, which takes all the guess work out of it for me, and saves me from having to stand in the grocery store not knowing what to choose. For us, wine plays a few roles, and while we enjoy a nice wine pairing at dinner, we feel the ultimate treat is a glass of wine after the kids have gone off to bed. It’s the perfect adult time.

Alan says was very happy with the Zinfandel, he’s had many middle and top shelf red wines that just weren’t good by comparison. I’m not much of a red wine person, so you’ll have to take his word for it. I will say it did have a delightful aroma to it, and I did take a little taste, but really, when it comes to reds, it’s all him.

We both felt the Chardonnay was good but would have been nice paired with some grilled salmon for dinner. It was a little drier than we preferred as we both typically enjoy sweeter wines like Rieslings.

Alan and I are really looking forward to next months shipment and the wines that will be delivered to our door! (That’s almost the best part!) We will plan a little better and have a pairing to enjoy (you know, like chocolate!)!! What’s really fun is that the California Wine Club even has a iPhone app to help with wine pairings. It’s free for a limited time, so you’ll want to download it now. You can read more about our thoughts on it here.

The California Wine Club has four different wine club packages to choose from.

The Premier Club is $36.45 a month (plus shipping) and includes two wines from award winning California wineries.

The Signature Club is $125 a month (includes shipping). This is for people who are more like aficionados and collectors of fine wines.

The International Club is available for around $65-$80 a month (includes shipping) and features wines from wineries from around the world.

There is also a club for Aged Cabernets which provides members with Cabernets that have been aged from 8-15 years. This club is from $150 – $235 (includes shipping).

Each California Wine Club membership delivers two bottles of wine to your door each month that you are a member. Because this is alcohol there MUST be someone available 21 or older to sign for the shipment. If need be have the shipment sent to your place of work or a neighbor. You certainly don’t want FedEx sending THIS box back! You can choose to receive one red and one white wine. Or if you prefer you can modify your club membership to receive two reds or two wines (same wine).

  1. Reisling tends to be one of my faves. Also there’s a grape called Diamond that makes a lovely semi sweet wine.
I don’t care for most reds either.
