When the exclusive invite to see a sneak preview Disney/Pixars Cars2 landed in my inbox I was excited! I emailed my husband almost instantaneously to let him know we had plans for that Saturday morning.
Amazingly, we made it out the door on time and through the Seattle rain to the fabulous Pacific Place theater to see Cars2 3d!! Along with other members of the press and their children (the real critics) we settled into our seats.
We were concerned a little about our 3 ½ year old son, Sebastian, who is Autistic. Would he want to watch the movie (since we don't even own Cars)? Would he keep his 3d glasses on? Would he like the story? We were about to find out!
First up - the previews! Childhood nostalgia was in full effect when the preview for the new Muppets movie hit the screen, and we were equally as excited to see that The Lion King is being remastered for 3d. And of course, the Toy Story short, "Hawaiian Vacation" got lots of laughs!
And on to the show! Cars2 started out instantly as action packed fun. Sadly for me, the first loud rev of the engine sent Quincy (my little one) into hysterics, which left my husband and son to enjoy the movie in those nice stadium seats while I stood in next to the door.
The effects were amazing and the story was attention grabbing.
Here is a synopsis of the film:
Star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British super spy Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voice of Emily Mortimer). Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world. The fast-paced fun includes a colorful new all-car cast, complete with menacing villains and international racing competitors.
I was loving the new story and characters, even from my spot down by the door. It was certainly fast paced FUN! I loved the spy based plotline- lots of good jokes for parents.
All good things must come to an end though, as Cars2 got to be too much for Sebastian, so we had to leave before all the mysteries were solved. So sad!
The verdict? It might be a bit much for your little one, but school age fans are bound to enjoy the new adventures.
We left the theater and headed to Target. As we walked by the tv displays there was a trailer for Cars2 and a quiet "Cars!" came from the shopping cart. We went to the toy aisle and he grabbed a package off the shelves "Open this" to a two pack containing Lightening McQueen and Francesco Bernoulli! Then, we went and grabbed the Cars DVD.
Needless to say, it's Monday morning, and I think we've watched Cars about eight times. So while we had to leave early, Cars, you have a new fan. My son.
Disclosure: I received complimentary tickets to see Cars 2 on behalf of Disney Pictures. All opinions are my own.
