Goodbye Google Friend Connect

Not so long ago (sometime in November I think) Google announced they were discontinuing Google Friend Connect for non-Blogspot blogs. The idea is they want to encourage people to utilize Google Plus. Fair enough.

There was an outcry among the blogging forums I belong to. How could they! What would this mean for our followers? What will happen when PR reps ask non Blogspot users for their Follower numbers?

Honestly? While I appreciate my readers following me via GFC, the widget has been down more than not. It’s buggy and has been a hassle.

So, since in March Google Friend Connect will no longer be valid on this blog, I’ve decided to remove it. Call it a fresh start for 2012 if you would like.

So the 1678 of you who followed me via Google Friend Connect? I thank you! If you haven’t already, do you mind adding me to your circles on Google Plus? If I know you personally, shoot me an email and I’ll add you to my personal Google Plus too.

The way we use social media is always changing. Who knows, maybe Facebook is next…

  1. GFC has been such a pain for the past 6 months and you are right it was hardly ever working. I had over 13K followers. What happens to them after March I don’t know. I wonder if they will still be able to read my blog in their Blogger Dashboard or does that go poof as well. Who knows. I’m sure its only a matter of time before they scrap it for the Blogger folks as well.

  2. I better start focusing on building my G+! I’m only at 862, while my GFC is 1781. Following you 🙂

  3. Gosh, I sure hope FB isn’t next!! :p

    your already in my circle

  5. I’m staying with Blogspot, and so I don’t have to worry about it–at least for right now. I do think that GFC will be discontinued for all after a while. i am trying to build up my G+ circles for my blog.

I don’t have a blog. I just follow you wonderful people. It might help, if you would send everyone on your e-mail newsletter list a direct link to Google + so we can make sure we have added you to our circles. It shouldn’t be hard to do since you send us newsletters anyway. Everyone I followed on GFC, I also subscribed to their e-mail newsletter. You should be able to get almost everyone back using that method.

  7. Mary Dailey says:

You were already in my circle, but I’m happy to check!

Gc has been down more often than not kind of happy to see it go
