Movie Night: The Secret World of Arrietty

The latest DVD to grace my player was The Secret World of Arrietty. Chances are, you’re way more hip than me and have already seen this delightful animated film in theaters. I am not so cool. 🙂

In between all the crazy rain we’ve been having and the move to our new house, I found time to watch The Secret of Arrietty. Remember “The Borrowers”? That’s what this film is based on. And it’s really really cute.

See what I mean:

Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger. The English language version of “The Secret World of Arrietty” was executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and directed by Gary Rydstrom.

Now, my son really wasn’t into this film, he’s more of an action packed Cars kind of kid, but the it was still really enjoyable and a great addition to our collection. Maybe he’ll like it more when we watch it again (because we will watch it again!!)

  2. Oh my god! When I was a little girl, the Borrowers were my favorite, second only to the Hobbit, and then, as I grew older, Miyazaki films became one of my favorite things too! But… sadly, I couldn’t afford to see it in theaters. I’ve never been able to afford it and I haven’t seen it yet, and I really want it. <3

  3. I’ve heard good things and I think my children would enjoy it.

I loved the borrowers when I was younger. I read all the books our library had and watched the tv show. I am sure there was a cartoon version. I liked the idea of a family living in our walls that took some of my things to use. My imagination had a whole family living in our house complete with pets. My oldest will likethis movie she has the same imagination.
