I participated in a campaign on behalf of Millennial Central for Seventh Generation. I received a promotional item and product samples as a thank you for participating
Why Do We Need To Address Chemical Reform?
Toxins. They are everywhere. The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) grandfathered in 62,000 chemicals when enacted in 1976 and over 20,000 have since been added. Of those 80,000 the EPA has required testing on less than 10%. In the European Union (EU), 1,328 chemicals have been banned for use in personal care products. In the U.S., only 11 chemicals have been banned or restricted by the FDA. I find that mind boggling. Did you know that before a baby is even born they are exposed to 300! toxins?!?
These chemicals have been linked to many health risks, such as Cancer, Alzheimer’s, learning disabilities, asthma, birth defects, and various reproductive problems.
What Can You Do You To Spread Awareness And Get Involved?
Start by signing Seventh Generation’s petition to urge Congress to reevaluate the Toxic Substances Control Act for the first time since 1976. Seventh Generation has a goal of collecting 100,000 signatures by April 24th – you can help them by signing, and asking your friends and family to do the same.
What else can you do?
1. Take off your shoes at the door, and stop tracking chemicals into your home.
2.Take a look at the products in your home you use to clean, and as body care for yourself and your children. Replace the “offensive ones” with safer choices like the products from Seventh Generation.
3. Open a window and let fresh air in whenever possible.
4. Eat more whole foods.
5. Ban the can and avoid those pesky BPA liners.
Make sure you come to the #FightToxins Twitter Party on Thursday, April 10th from 1:00 – 2:00 PM ET to chat about tips and tricks for living a healthy, green lifestyle as well as the importance of using products with as few chemicals as possible.
