When Seattle Public Schools announced the bell time changes earlier this year, I found out that it would affect my children’s school. The reason for the change was to allow middle school and high school students start their day later, meaning that my elementary school kids would be starting at 7:55 instead of 9:40 this coming school year. It also means they will be getting out earlier each day – at just after 2pm instead of just after 4pm. With the big changes, I want to come up with some fun back to school treats.
My daughter Quincy is usually telling me she’s hungry as she’s getting off the bus, her older brother at least gets through the front door. And both of them always ask “Are we doing something fun today?”
We start school in about two weeks, and I have a few ideas to make their first days back to school fun ones. After I put them on the bus, I’m going to head up to my neighborhood Safeway for some easy back to school treats! Our Safeway is within walking distance, and I love stopping by there for easy pre-prepared items for simple meals and snacks.
Safeway has every thing I need:
DIGIORNO® pizzeria!™
NESTLÉ® Fun Size Candy : NESTLÉ® BUTTERFINGER®
NESTLÉ® NESQUIK® Powder
NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Refrigerated Cookie Dough
NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Morsels
The plan? An after school movie party with pizza and a cookie decorating bar! I know the kids will love it, and I feel good about saving money at Safeway.

The best part about using pre-prepared foods is it really makes it simple to have a fun after school activity for my kids.
Easy Back to School Treats with a COOKIE BAR!
First up, pizza! We have family pizza movie night often and the DIGIORNO pizzeria! is a favorite. Pair it with some chocolate milk made with NESQUICK and you’ve got the perfect after school meal.
Next up? Cookie Bar!
I confess, I’m a sucker for Refrigerated Cookie Dough. It makes it so easy to pop in a few cookies in the oven, or when you’re setting up a cookie bar, two sheets worth! Plus, the mini size is so cute and perfect for small hands!
I have a trick to baking cookies – it’s parchment paper. It keeps them from sticking to the cookie sheet, and it allows for easy cleanup.
Then it’s just baking the cookies, putting them on a cooling rack and decorating them! Typically the trick to getting the toppings to stay on the cookies is to put them on right after they come out of the oven while the cookies are still warm. But when your kids, you’re excited about cookies and toppings as an after school treat, and well, anything goes!
For toppings, my son Sebby loves Morsels, he often asks me to put a small amount in a bowl for him for a treat. I knew they’d make the perfect addition to our cookie bar, in addition to crumbled BUTTERFINGER candy bars. Drizzle some frosting on top and we’d be in business.
Pizza, cookies and movies – the perfect after school treat! I just hope Quincy thinks it’s FUN enough.
