The road trip. Before 2020 it seems we did them all the time. We’d pile the kids in the car and head up 1-5 towards Chuckanut Drive, stopping at a restaurant or various convenience stores if the kids got hungry or needed to use the bathroom. Nowadays our favorite drives are different: less stops, planned bathroom breaks and a basket full of snacks from Safeway.

In light of the current pandemic, camping and family roads trips are still trending this Summer. More families are trying to figure out a way to stay active, create positive memories, and still be mindful of social distancing and staying healthy. Providing pre-planned meals and on-the-go snack options will limit the amount of stops while traveling and keep the kiddos (and parents) full, happy and ready to hit the open road.

Next time we go for a drive, I’m ready with Open Nature® and Signature SELECT™ products. Safeway has some of the best road trip food ideas! There is a great selection of family road trip/camping necessities like beef jerky, protein bars, granola, pita chips/crackers, pre-planned meals and even s’more fixins if you want!

Best Road Trip Food Ideas

When planning your next road trip or camping experience, you have 3 main categories:

1. Foods for the cooler

2. Prepackaged or easy to store snacks

3. Non-food items

Cold picnic foods

Whether you have a hard sided cooler or an insulated bag, you’ll definitely want to keep some of your snacks cold. Here are some of my favorites that are easy to find at Safeway. There are so many choices in their Signature Cafe® line from pasta salad, to precut veggies, fruits and dips! You can even get a sandwich made right in from their deli. We like refreshe® by Signature SELECT™water because it’s easy to give everyone a bottle. Hint: Pick up some Signature SELECT™ Liquid Water Enhancer in your favorite flavor (we like the Raspberry Lemonade) to add some pizazz to your water.
Other cold snacks for our picnic are Signature Cafe Guacamole cups and Signature Cafe Apple Slices with Caramel Dip. Portion control so everyone gets their share and less mess to clean up!

Chopped veggies – carrot, celery, and cucumber sticks.
Dips – Hummus, Guacamole
Sandwiches/wraps

Prepackaged and Easy-To-Store Snacks

Tip: Break the snacks into individual sized packs if they aren’t already pre-packaged. This saves an entire bag from being eaten at once. Because that never happens. Ever. Individual portions also lessens the germ factor! This is especially important if you are having a social distanced picnic with friends. In addition to the Signature SELECT Peppered Beef Jerky, Open Nature Sea Salt Pita Crackers and Signature SELECT Chewy Almond Coconut Protein Bars, we also made some marshmallow cranberry granola bars with Signature SELECT products. Keep reading for the recipe!
