We love to bake during the holidays. My kids are all about making cookies to share with others, but things are a little different this year, so we decided to make sugar cookies in a jar to give to others. This homemade sugar cookie mix makes the BEST sugar cookies. Cookie mix a great holiday food gift idea!
Sugar Cookies In A Jar
While we can't have our cookie swaps this year, we can still give the gift of cookies! Give friends and family a homemade cookie mix that they can use to a warm batch of homemade cookies with just a few extra ingredients. By creating this thoughtful and inexpensive holiday gift with these Sugar Cookies in a Jar you can still have the fun of a cookie exchange. Sort of.
I get all of my cookie making ingredients at Safeway. While normally my kids and I would love to browse the baking aisle for Signature SELECT™ Ingredient items: Flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, baking chips, sprinkles and extract, we now rely on Grocery Delivery to get us everything we need to bake cookies for ourselves, and make mixes for others. We're creating fun family memories baking cookies and making sugar cookie mix in a jar for gifting others. This recipe creates an easy and delicious cookie!
What is a cookie in a jar?
A cookie in a jar recipe is a pre-measured dry mix. You fill a mason jar with the mix and then all you have to do is add the moist ingredients and bake! It's a great gift idea, or way to have cookie mix almost ready to go at anytime!
Sugar Cookies Mix Recipe
This recipe is designed to fit in a 1 quart, wide mouth, mason jar. If you have a little bit of room at the top of your jar, feel free to top it with some colorful sprinkles. About ⅛ of a cup should fit.
What you need:
1 cup Signature SELECT Sugar
2 ½ cups Signature SELECT Flour
½ teaspoon Signature SELECT Salt
½ teaspoon Signature SELECT Baking Soda
You'll also need:
1 quart jar with lid
ribbon or twine
cookie cutter
In a large bowl, combine flour, salt and baking soda. Layer your sugar in a quart sized canning jar, then layer the flour mixture on top. I find using a canning funnel makes this much easier.
Attach the following recipe to your jar so your loved one can make their sugar cookies in a jar on baking day! If you want to make your gift extra special, add a Safeway gift card to buy the additional ingredients needed, as well as a small sampling of the cookies!
How to Make Sugar Cookies In A Jar
To make the best sugar cookies in a jar, you'll need a pre-filled quart jar of dry ingredients, and the following moist ingredients:
Moist Ingredients for cookies in a jar
½ cup butter, room temperature
1 egg
½ teaspoon Signature SELECT vanilla
½ cup sour cream
Directions to make cookies in a jar
Preheat oven to 350F.
Cream your butter, then add egg, vanilla and sour cream until blended.
Add your dry ingredients from your cookie mix in a jar, and mix until a dough forms.
Do not over mix!
Chill your dough for about one hour.
Roll your cookie dough out on a floured surface to about ¼" thickness.
Use a cookie cutter to cut out cookie shapes and place them on a cookie sheet.
Bake at 350F for 10-12 minutes.
Remove the cookies the oven and allow them to cool before decorating.
The amount of cookies the recipe makes will depend on the size of your cookie cutter, but you will likely be able to make about two dozen cookies.
Tips for the perfect sugar cookie
Letting your butter come to room temperature will make it easier to cream it with the other wet ingredients.
Chill your dough for at least an hour or it will be too soft to work with. This is a sticky dough, so don't skip this step!
If you use a stand mixer, use a low speed to combine your dough or you will end up with tough cookies.
It's really important to flour your surface. You can use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat with a generous sprinkling of flour on top. This will help your dough from sticking.
Work your dough in small batches. You don't want to roll out your dough more than necessary, or again, you'll end up with tough cookies.
Use parchment paper to make it easier to remove your cookies from the cookie sheet.
IMPORTANT: Do not OVER BAKE your cookies. It is better to slightly under-bake your cookies as they continue to "cook" when they are cooling on your cookie sheet. If your sugar cookies get a dark brown edge they are overdone. Once removed from the sheet, cool your cookies on a cooling rack.
Bonus cookie day tip
Don't forget to add a Gingerbread House Kit to your order! It's a fun way to spend time together as a family and they make great gifts with the cookie jar too.

Sugar cookies look wonderful. I like the recipe.

This concept would work with an endless number of things because most ingredients in most recipes are shelf stable. They just have to add the milk, eggs, or extract, depending on the recipe. You could even include some of the more exotic "chips" that are available, like Andes Mint, Heath, or Reeses. We have a baking mix that we make ahead of time that is similar to Bisquick, and it works with biscuits, pancakes, and tortillas. . We store it for several weeks.
