It was hard enough balancing a healthy lifestyle as a college student back in the 90s. As a parent keeping healthy habits isn’t any easier. I’ve put together some tips to stay healthy with a busy lifestyle.
I know most of this list is what many of us refer to as “no-brainers” and I’ve written about some of them before. But can’t we all use gentle reminders from time to time?
Stay hydrated, but don’t rely on coffee.
The easiest way to make sure you are drinking enough water by carrying a stainless steel or glass water bottle with you. Drinking 8 glasses of water a day will help keep your energy level up (so you can avoid coffee) The problem with too much coffee is it overloads your liver, dehydrates you and increases the risk of irregular blood sugar. Did you know your body can mistake dehydration for hunger? Drinking room temperature water is better for you than cold water too because your body has to work so hard to warm it up (which can affect digestion.)
Get creative with exercise.
If an errand is less than a mile away, consider walking or biking. I’m so guilty of just hopping in the car to run to the grocery store – the rain shouldn’t be an excuse (though I use it all the time!) When you can’t get to the gym, choose stairs over elevators and escalators, and park further away in the parking lot. Don’t forget to take quick stretch breaks when working at a desk too! Watching your favorite tv show or movie? Grab a few stretches during commercials.
Want more exercise motivation? Workout with your kids!
I’m not taking about dragging your kids to the gym. Playing with your kids – jumping on a trampoline, building an obstacle course in the back yard or even doing with my friends Leanne and Tyler do – dance parties while brushing your teeth! You’d be surprised by how easy it is to get active with your kids, just by being with your kids!
Ditch the junk food.
I know for some people this isn’t easy with kids.: If there is junk food in the household, it will be eaten. Plus, our kids learn their habits from us, so it’s for your families benefit to keep the junk out of the house.
Sleep and relaxation.
First off, no matter how busy your life becomes, it’s important to make sleep a priority. A good nights sleep is critical for your health and well being. It’s not just sleep either. It’s important to give yourself time to relax. If you are constantly coming home from a day full of meetings with a busy evening your stress levels are most likely ridiculous. Stress has a terrible impact on your health and wellbeing. One of the best things you can do for yourself and your family is to stay healthy and fit is to learn how to relax.
Bring your meals with you to work and school.
Jenny Craig meals aren’t just for home. One of the best things about them is the convenience factor. The simple fact that your meals are prepackaged and don’t require refrigeration make it easy for you to male healthier food choices when you’re away from home.
