Growing up in the late 80s and early 90s, I remember watching Roseanne with my step-sisters. We shared the hopes and joys of the Conner family, and Roseanne’s infectious laugh drove my father crazy. Which, as children do, made us love the show even more. Never once did I think as a teenager that I’d ever have the chance to sit on the famous couch in the Conner’s living room, or meet the cast of the show.
Thank you to ABC for having me as a guest to the Roseanne set.
My Roseanne Secret Set Visit!
Then, last December, I sat on the Roseanne couch and it was like being taken back to my childhood. The memories of laugher and sisterly bonding. The more things change, the more they stay the same, because the beloved Conner family is back, and they’ve done some growing. The Roseanne revival stars Roseanne Barr as Roseanne Conner, John Goodman as Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf as Jackie Harris, Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner-Healy, Sara Gilbert as Darlene Conner, Michael Fishman as D.J. Conner, Emma Kenney as Harris Conner-Healy, Ames McNamara as Mark Conner-Healy and Jayden Rey as Mary Conner.
Straight up nostalgia you guys! From the afghan, to the famous plaid couch to the family photos we saw every episode, being on the set of Roseanne felt a tiny bit like home.
While during our Roseanne set visit, we also had the special opportunity to chat with Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Lecy Goranson (Becky) and Michael Fishman (DJ) about where they’ve been the past few years and their experiences of coming back together to Roseanne.
Highlights from our interview with the cast of Roseanne
Chatting with Sara, Lecy and Michael was really special. The bond between them was unmistakable – beyond friendship, and much more like family. It was a real treat to be in the moment with them and talking about the revival of Roseanne.
How did it feel to come back to the set like 20 years later?
Lecy: I mean it really feels like a family. It feels like going home. I’m from outside of Chicago, and it’s like that — when you walk in your front door, and that’s how I felt here, especially when I see these faces and I hear Roseanne’s voice piercing through the set.
Why did you feel that now was the right time to do it, and then what do you want this new generation that never saw the original show to walk away with?
Sara: I think in one respect it was an incredible time to do it, because I felt like our country is so divided. I feel like this is a working class family that can have varying political views even within the family but still love each other. I thought what a great way to try to help unite people, have people listen to each other. You know, I strongly believe that we can disagree without being so divided. So, I’m hoping that we can help in that way.
Can you tell us a little bit about each of your characters, where you are? Are you married? Do you have children?
(Note: I love how Michael reflects on everyone and how they impact each other.)
Michael: I think one thing that Sara’s done really well in that is embody the way that parents prioritize and take certain jobs or positions that they don’t always envision or want to. I think we can all as parents know that there are times when you end up doing things that you didn’t imagine that you would end up, but you’re making the best of a situation, which I think most of the country will really respond to.
After spending some time on the set with Sara, Lecy and Michael, we had the opportunity to take a photo on the beloved family couch with Roseanne herself!
Why should you tune into Roseanne tonight?
The show resonates with people because we deal with real-life topics, and it’s not always pretty and it’s not always easy. And real life’s not. – Michael Fishman (DJ)
